Public Policy and Sociology
The Public Policy and Sociology department is the most recently set up department at IIM Sirmaur. The vision of the department is to inform policy, academia and citizens through rigorous research, training and classroom engagement. It endeavours to work at the intersection of academia and practice, making research more accessible, and growing as a knowledge centre for policy makers, implementers, non-governmental organisations, academicians and concerned civil society members. Drawing on some eclectic methodologies, the department aims to critically inform persistent and contemporary policy and sociological issues.
In a collective effort of reflecting on policy issues, the department looks forward to collaborating with organisations and individuals - local, state and central governments, bureaucrats, legislators, non-governmental organisations, policy think tanks, businesses and researchers - to create an ecosystem of healthy knowledge creation and sharing.
Inside the classroom, the courses offer to engage with concepts and cases at the intersections of markets, society and the state. Specifically developing managerial skills could tackle wicked policy and societal issues. The sessions draw on cases, managerial lessons and innovations in governments, societies and businesses. Further, the courses nudge participants to move and learn from beyond the classroom. Currently, the department offers a compulsory course on an Introduction to Public Policy for the MBA program. It offers electives like Gender and society, Socio-economic business history and Eco-social entrepreneurship.
As the department grows and develops, it hopes to leverage inter-disciplinary knowledge and work in creating a collaborative and innovative learning environment.
