IIM Sirmaur Organizes Summer School for School Children to Celebrate World Environment Day
Indian Institute of Management, Sirmaur organized a one day long summer school on 4th June 2019 for school students (of Paonta Sahib) at the IIM Sirmaur Campus in Paonta Sahib, District: Sirmaur, H. P. The programme titled How to Manage Your Waste Efficiently? was held on the eve of World Environment Day, which is observed on 5th June every year.
The event was held under the community engagement initiatives of IIM Sirmaur with an objective to create awareness among the younger generations about the impending threat posed by the generation of different wastes, the subsequent perils due to this and the efficient methods of handling the same. The programme was inaugurated by Professor Neelu Rohmetra, Director, IIM Sirmaur. Professor Neelu Rohmetra interacted with the participants and emphasized the need of waste management, keeping the environment clean and the conservation of natural resources. Dr. Arpita Ghosh was the key resource person who conducted the sessions and engaged the participants in the hands-on activities.
The 50 participants representing different schools (in Paonta Sahib) and studying in 4th-6th standards, were specifically made aware of the dangers posed by air pollution, bursting crackers, garbage burning, plastic pollution, methods to decrease waste production, efficient segregation of produced wastes, necessity of reuse & recycling of wastes etc. The classroom sessions used pictures, audio visuals mode and quizzes to train the students. The programme also involved plantation drive, where the participants took part in planting saplings on the IIM Sirmaur campus. Further reusing of waste plastic bottles in the form of converting them into tubs and planting small saplings was demonstrated to the students. The participants were also taken around the IIM Sirmaur Campus in Paonta Sahib. The summer school ended with the distribution of certificates to the participants.
