On 12th October 2017, IIM Sirmaur hosted Prof. Raj Nehru, Vice-Chancellor of Vishwakarma Skill Development University, Haryana to share insights from his rich experience in the corporate and educational arenas. Prof.(Dr.) Neelu Rohmetra, Director, IIM Sirmaur welcomed Prof. Nehru and applauded his novel initiative to impart relevant skills for the youth to be job-ready. She spoke about the dignity of labour and its lack thereof, in the Indian society. She shared her belief that his efforts toward restructuring vocational education would ensure that the working class gets its dues. He explained the importance of creating proper progression in vocational education and how important it is to discover the skills which will be of prime importance in the near future. Students got a glimpse of his journey, how he started with implementing skill development workshops for the underprivileged as a private citizen and now, as the youngest VC of a new skills-development university, is making a significant contribution to the government's initiative for vocational education. Prof. Nehru spoke about the importance of problem-solving abilities, decision-making power, integrity and team work in the corporate world. He stressed the need for accepting challenges, troubleshooting, groundwork and most importantly, the necessity of learning every single day. Furthermore, he elucidated the role that good networking plays in our lives. He concluded the session by mentioning how we need to improve ourselves continuously in order to advance in our careers.
