IIM Sirmaur conducted National seminar ‘Restore Our Earth’ to commemorate Earth Day'
Centre for Sustainability and Environmental Management, IIM Sirmaur conducted an online seminar titled ‘Restore Our Earth’ to commemorate Earth Day i.e., 22nd April. The CSEM was established in the year 2019 as an initiative of Prof. Neelu Rohmetra, Former Director IIM Sirmaur. The seminar was attended by around 25 participants from across the country. Dr. Arpita Ghosh conducted the seminar and delivered the welcome address and the opening remarks shedding light on the themes of the seminar. She also informed about the villages adopted by the institute under the UBA for catering to the socio-economic concerns of the society and creating an enabling environment.
The first keynote speaker for Panel Discussion was Mr. Roushan Ranjan Jha, Sr. Manager, Environment Strategy & Sustainability Management, Tata Steel who shed light on Earth overshoot day. He also talked about how TATA steel as a company works for the planet with a well-elaborated environmental policy which includes green practices and the use of clean energy for their plant processes. They have cut their carbon emissions by 20% in the past few years.
The subsequent speaker Dr. Shruti Sharma Rana, Assistant Professor, TERI SAS drew attention to sustainability as an obvious business choice. She opined that the economy is a subsidiary of the environment and society, not the other way around.
Mr. Arun Sharma, Water, Wastewater Infrastructure, and WASH Consultant, continued the session by focusing on putting forward the case for environmental sustainability with a perspective at national and individual levels. He also talked about how businesses are addressing sustainability challenges.
Dr. Neha Sharma, IIM Sirmaur was another moderator in this seminar. She introduced other speakers and shared background for the next phase discussion.
Dr. Arpita Ghosh, Assistant Professor, IIM Sirmaur initiated the session and explained the sustainability goals and sustainable use of resources. Dr. Ghosh also highlighted the use of circular economy and the concept of responsible production & consumption for the practice of sustainable business.
Dr. Debashish Mandal, Senior Scientist, ICAR Dehradun explained the water conservation and the importance of inculcating the ideas of green practices and sustainable use of technology. He also talked about the policies for promoting avenues in order to address the ecosystem and the use of green technology for a nature-based solution.
The final speaker of the seminar Dr. Ashish Aggarwal, Associate Professor, IIM Lucknow addressed the business sustainability domain and also highlighted the triple bottom line approach. He addressed the screening of capitals on ESG criteria and also discussed the regulatory norms along with energy efficiency.
